Making Smarter Landscaping Choices

Think About Using Xeriscaping For Your Yard

With so many places suffering from drought, lawns and gardens aren't really getting the water that they need. If you live in one of those drought-stricken areas, you may be dealing with water rationing and fines if you water your lawn and garden. That means that they start to look neglected and may die off. However, there are things that you can do. One of them is to look at xeriscaping.

What Is Xeriscaping?

Xeriscaping is a landscaping technique which focuses heavily on native plants and plants that are highly drought-resistant and need little water to survive. That doesn't mean that you have to rip out all your grass and cover your lawn in rocks and have very few plants in your garden. It doesn't matter where you live, there are native plants that don't need a lot of water, and you can use them to create a pleasing yard.

Can Xeriscaping Use Grass?

One issue that a lot of people have with xeriscaping is that they think that they have to get rid of all their grass. A lot of popular grasses used for yards are non-native in a lot of places and require a lot of water in order to stay green and keep growing. However, there are other choices for grasses that can be used in low-water situations. If you want to go with grass, for whatever reason, you can talk to a landscape designer or landscaping company to see what grasses are native and what they would recommend.

If you don't want to use grass, you can use some kind of ground cover instead. These are generally plants that hug the ground. They tend to grow fast and spread out well. A bonus is that they will help keep the top soil in place. In drought -stricken areas, the top soil can often dry out and get blown around. Ground cover can give you the appearance of a green grass lawn, but need much less water.

What Are Some Other Xeriscape Benefits?

Well, one benefit is that your city may actually give you some money if you rip out your non-native grass lawn and work on xeriscaping. That can help to defray any costs that you will run up changing your lawn over.

Xeriscaping is a good way to work with plants that need much less water, are native to your area, and look good. If you want to xeriscape, talk to a landscape designer who specializes in this technique, and let them help you get started on your new lawn.
