Making Smarter Landscaping Choices

Yard Look Dead And Boring? 2 Ways To Bring It Alive

If your yard looks boring to you and you do not have landscaping at all, below are some tips on how you can liven it up. Landscaping can make a very big difference, and it can transform a yard. You can do many of these things yourself, or you can hire a landscaping contractor to do them for you.

Perennial Flower Garden

Building a perennial flower garden is beneficial because you plant the flowers one time and they come back the next year. Some perennials are short lived, meaning they only come back a couple of years. Others, however, are long lived and will keep coming back year after year. Some of these long lived perennials include:

  • Daylily
  • Blanket flower
  • Peony
  • Hellebore
  • Coneflower

When planting the flowers in your flower garden, think about the placement of them. You can put the taller flowers in the back and then work your way to the front so the shortest are in the front. You could also put the tallest flowers in the middle of the garden and put shorter ones around it. Some taller perennials are the coneflower, black-eyed Susan, hibiscus, and iris.

If you would like to plant some flowers every year you can add some annuals in the garden also. Some annuals that would work well include:

  • Marigold
  • Petunia
  • Vinca
  • Marigold
  • Zinnia

Trees

If you have a lot of trees on your property, they may be out of shape, or have some dead branches. It can be dangerous for you to try to trim them yourself, so you should hire a tree service company to do this job for you.

How the tree service shapes the trees depends on the type of trees you have. They will likely use a chain saw to do this.  They will first remove any dead branches, and make sure the tree is healthy and free from disease. If they do find disease, they can treat it. They will likely use a fungicide, which may be injected into the trunk or sprayed on the tree.

If you do not have any trees on your property, you should plant some. Choose trees that flower part of the year, such as the dogwood or the Bradford pear. Plant small ornamental trees that will grow much faster. Some ornamental trees you can choose include:

  • Weeping cherry tree
  • Flowering magnolia tree
  • Crape myrtle
  • Japanese maple

Adding new shrubs if you do not have any will also help your landscaping look alive. If you want more color, choose flowering shrubs.
